"Lee Sung-hee, CEO of AP Satellite: 'Government Support Is Crucial for the Takeoff of Korea’s Space Industry'

AP Satellite, a manufacturer of satellite communication terminals, has urged the government to expand support measures aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of South Korea’s private space industry. In particular, the company emphasized the need for policy-driven global market connections and long-term investment that reflects the unique characteristics of space research and development.

At the “2026 Economic Growth Strategy National Briefing” held at the Blue House on the 9th, AP Satellite CEO Lee Sung-hee called for increased government support to bolster the global competitiveness of South Korea’s space sector. The briefing, presided over by President Lee Jae-myung, was attended by key government officials, including Prime Minister Kim Min-seok and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Koo Yun-cheol, as well as leaders from economic organizations and industry representatives.

Lee stated, “Korea’s status is at a world-class level, but our share in the global space market—worth approximately 700 trillion won—remains at just 1%,” adding, “We must go beyond the limitations of the domestic market and advance onto the global stage.”

He presented two key elements: connecting to global markets and patient government investment. “Countries around the world strongly desire space cooperation with Korea,” he said. “If the government takes greater interest in private companies and SMEs and provides an umbrella of support, it will serve as a catalyst for significant leaps forward.”

Lee also called for improvements in research and development policies tailored to the unique nature of the space industry. “Space technology requires long periods for maturity and verification,” he explained. “Unlike the typical four-year return cycle of private investment, a longer-term approach is essential.”

He continued, “Beyond simply accepting failures made in good faith, the government needs to show patience by investing and waiting longer,” emphasizing that “with steady government support and perseverance, Korea’s space talent will be able to soar on the global stage.”

During his opening remarks at the briefing, President Lee stated, “2026 will mark the first year of a major economic leap,” adding, “We will build an economic structure where companies and citizens alike can share opportunities as the nation grows.”

Meanwhile, AP Satellite provides satellite manufacturing services and satellite data reception and processing through 16 ground stations worldwide. The company is also working to establish a satellite AIT (Assembly, Integration, and Testing) center equipped with a 10-meter-high large clean room and launch, orbit, and electromagnetic environmental testing facilities. With the AIT center beginning operations this year, AP Satellite is expected to accelerate the expansion of private-led space development by establishing an integrated system for satellite manufacturing, testing, and verification.
